This page contains links to PDF files I have created of my photographic “travels,” including "Photographing Vermont," and The Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The inspiration for these works was an old "guide" to Photographing Vermont, which I used for my first trip back there in about 20 years ("How To Find and Photograph The Photo Scenics In Vermont") By Arnold John Kaplan. The guide gives detailed directions to find some of the "iconic" scenic shots often seen in calendars, greeting cards, magazines, etc. To my dismay, however, following the guide for fall-color trips for two successive years in 2005 and 2006, I found many of the scenes to be greatly changed and in some cases, no longer viable. While this wasn't critical in my mind, as I was personally looking for a type rather than a particular scenic, it illustrates a point made in the "Photographing Vermont" pdf: change is constant. What I recorded in 2006 in Vermont will no doubt be different in 2020. Arnold, 93 years old in 2009, is still alive and still photographing Vermont! I have recently spoken with him and he does make an effort to update his book for changed locations. I would recommend that a photographer seriously wanting to get the most out of a Vermont trip go armed with both my guide and his book.
In any event, I was motivated to keep good notes and, eventually, to put them in a form I hope others will find useful. I currently offer guides to Vermont and Upper Michigan.
These documents are freely downloadable and you may make electronic copies and distribute them, or print them. The materials are copyrighted, however and may not be reproduced or used in any other form without my express, written permission.
There is a "school of thought" that will suggest that I should not "publish" this information. I have always been a firm believer in openness. However, I urge all who do use this information to practice good stewardship of our natural places, as well as courtesy and respect for the private property of others. I believe there is more than enough natural wonder for all of us--as long as we all "leave no footprint." Clicking on the links above will load the PDF in a new window. Please be patient. These are rather large (nearly 7mb) PDF files and will take a few moments to downoad.
